C. Everett Koop Lecture: Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and the Surgeons General

8:00 - 9:00

  • RADM Kenneth Moritsugu, USPHS (ret)

This session will provide an overview of the key elements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) that impact on the office of the U.S. Surgeon General and the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). The talk will look at the challenges and opportunities the law poses. Surveys have documented a need for a greater understanding of the impact of PPACA on PHS officers and what steps they need to take in response to it.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the health priorities of the more recent Surgeons General.
  2. Identify linkages between the Surgeon General's priorities and PPACA.
  3. Identify 3 key issues resulting from the PPACA that will impact the day-to-day work of the attendee and how these will be addressed.

Presented by the PHS Commissioned Officers Foundation/Association in Partnership with the University of Maryland School of Public Health and the Indian Health Clinical Support Center (accredited sponsor)
